Caribbean History- Trinidad

I am choosing to write about the beautiful Trinidad island it is located close to the continent of South America It's northeast of Venezuela and northwest of Guyana. By far Trinidad is the largest of the two main islands Tobago would be next. In "VCL" they state that " Trinidad has experienced a very rich past with a history marked by its various colonial occupants until its independence from Britain on August 31, 1962. It is actually the wealthiest country in the Caribbean as well as the third richest country by GDP(PPP) per capital in the America's after the United States and Canada. There wealth is attributed to it's large reserves and exploitation of oil and natural gas which I found pretty interesting. Trinidad was conquered by the Spanish in 1592 they continued under the Spanish rule until 1797 when they were captured by the British. "VCL" states, that they were colonized by the Spanish, British, French, Dutch, and Courlander (Latvia) that was during the same period when Tobago changed hands frequently. Trinidad gained independence in 1962 as I stated previously by the British Empire which they became a republic in 1976. They begin with the settlements of the islands by Amerindians, specifically the island Carib and Arawak peoples. Both of the islands were visited by Christopher Columbus it was on his third voyage that took place in 1498 he claimed the name of Spain. In ''VCL'', it says the history of the island and the diversity there is influenced and reflected by the beautiful architecture, they still have a few mansions that still remain on the island known as the " Magnificent seven" it is important to maintain the story of any country and is still preserving their history, which I admire because it meant a lot to them it is nice that people to this day can see how beautiful things were back then. I want to mention the cuisine that many tourists and celebrities have come to this beautiful place to try they are well known for this dish called " Pelau", which almost every home there prepares there own recipe of this it has a well seasoned pot of rice, pigeon peas, chicken or beef. I can see why it would be popular because it sounds amazing. Another dish that I found interesting was this thing called Bake and Shark which is some pieces of cooked shark between two pieces of fried dough. I feel like I would have to get dared to try that but for those adventure seekers out there that would be up their alley. Lastly, there culture is very diverse the majority groups are of Indian's which is 35%, African 34% descent, as well as Asian and European are apart of the beautiful island.
